Prince William County Schools

If you have children and live in, or are thinking of relocating to Virginia, Prince William County offers a lot and good schools are another benefit of living here. In fact, PWC schools were key to the county being named a "best community for young people.

Prince William County now is the second largest public schools system in Virginia (Fairfax is #1 in number of pupils). Having recently overtaken Virginia Beach, the Prince William County school system contains 62 elementary schools (more each year), 15 middle schools, and 10 public high schools, all under the supervision of Superintendent Steven L. Walts.

The total enrollment for the PWCS exceeds 75,000 students yet the average class sizes remain around 20. The school system grows in proportion to the needs of the county and the 11th high school is now under construction.

The Prince William County Public School System also includes a virtual high school, two traditional schools, five special education schools, and two alternative schools. Parents of Prince William County students can take advantage of the school system’s parent-school communication system. Edulink Intouch Online allows secure access to information including attendance and grades.

Programmed and operated by Prince William County Public Schools’ Media Production Services Department, PWCS-TV, the school system’s own television station, is accessible to all Prince William County Comcast subscribers.

Many parents are concerned about whether or not the school district has special programs for gifted students. The PWCS takes their gifted student programs very seriously. This starts in kindergarten with special attention given to those determined to be potentially gifted. After the third grade gifted students begin receiving additional services in a school based program or in a gifted education center.

Prince William County also offers eight Private/Religious schools; Prince William Academy, Pope John Paul the Great Catholic High School in Dumfries, Virginia, St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School in Triangle, Virginia, St Thomas Aquinas Regional School in Woodbridge, Virginia, All Saints School in Manassas, Virginia, Seton School in Manassas, Virginia, Holy Family School, in Dale City, Virginia, and Emmanuel Christian School, also in Manassas, Virginia.

Prince William County also has one college, Northern Virginia Community College with two campuses, one in Woodbridge, and one in Manassas, and three universities; George Mason University (Prince William Campus), Strayer University (Woodbridge campus and Manassas campus), and University of Northern Virginia (Manassas campus).

Traveling back and forth to your campus should be a breeze, since eight major highways run through Prince William County. There’s Interstate 66, Interstate 95, U. S. 1, U. S. Route 15, U. S. Route 29, State Route 28, State Route 234, and Prince William Parkway. Prince William County also offers a public bus service, as well as OmniRide, OmniLink, and OmniMatch, services provided by PRTC. PRTC is short for Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, the public transportation system in Prince William County, Virginia.

Prince William County offers extracurricular learning opportunities, such as The National Museum of the Marine Corps, the new historical museum of the United States Marine Corps, located in Triangle, Virginia and free to the public (including class field trips).

Classes might visit Prince William Forest Park located in eastern Prince William County, Virginia. At over 15,000 acres, Prince William Forest Park is the largest protected natural area in the Washington, D. C. metropolitan region.

For a good history lesson, a field trip might include a visit to Manassas National Battlefield Park. Preserving the site of two major American civil war battles, the park is located north of Manassas in Prince William County, Virginia. The two battles preserved here are known as the first and second battles of Bull Run outside the South.

Education is taken very seriously in the state of Virginia. With some of the smartest minds in the world coming and going out of Washington it is understandable the importance placed on knowledge. Learn all you can about what the Prince William County VA schools can do for you and your family.
